Crufts Obedience Championships
Judge: Kay
Raven

To coin a well -worn
cliché, being asked to judge the Obedience Championship at
Crufts 2010 is indeed a privilege and honour. The canine calendar's
'Oscars', is the result of a fantastic journey resulting in many
wonderful memories being created and the odd grey hair being accumulated!
I first got involved
in the sport of dog obedience in 1970 after acquiring a very nervous
German Shepherd bitch, who desperately needed for her owner to become
educated in what owning a dog was really all about
. I dared
to embark into this wonderful world of dog training which continues
to teach and extend me daily.
This initial interest
progressed from dog training into Animal training, specifically
for Film work, which has been my chosen career for the last 35+
years.
I have been blessed
to have some wonderful dogs in my life, each one being a teacher
in his or her own right. The individual challenges of training a
specific breed (from Lowchen to Beardie), or personality (from cheeky
to cowardly), has kept my interest and presented me with further
opportunities to learn.
My wonderful Shanvaals,
Meg and Flak took their beginner handler to the dizzy heights of
championship C, showing their class and ability. They have since
been followed by other 'characters and personalities' in all shapes
sizes and breeds, all of whom have been successful in their own
right be it as a working dog in 'Ticket', or through my profession
and being 'film stars' on the latest blockbuster.
Ob Ch Tanamerye Bunnie particularly
stands out, her three appearances at Crufts each have special meaning
and the result of many years of hard work and emotion.
My youngster Candy and oldie Lucas
both Golden Retrievers, and Fashion a Border Collie, are left to
fly the flag, and take me on the next stage of my journey
.
Where I would hope, once again, to be in the position of this years
competitors, god willing. The excitement and nerves are a privilege;
many would love to be experiencing.
Through these wonderful animals,
I have been fortunate to judge and teach in Belgium, Holland, Czech
Republic and Jersey not to mention the length and breadth of the
U.K. For me this appointment is indeed the pinnacle.
The honour of walking on the hallowed
green is not about two days in March when we all congregate at the
NEC, but the 'crescendo' of years of dedication, heartache and happiness.
Being able to watch a stylish,
well -trained dog combining those attributes of drive and accuracy
are for me, what Competitive Obedience is all about. This complimented
by clean, upright smart handling is the ultimate picture I will
be looking for. I hope that the teams who have qualified, can control
their nerves long enough to shine!
I feel honoured and privileged
to be able to judge this event and ensure all competitors that my
team, and myself will do our utmost to make this experience memorable
for all the right reasons.
Good luck
. Best Wishes
.
ENJOY!!

I grew up in a household
where we always had a dog or two, mostly GSDs so I've always had
a MEGA soft spot for shepherds. When I was 15 years old my Mum &
Dad "gave in" and allowed me to have a dog of my VERY
own - along came Sophie a very nervous and timid GSD. I didn't get
her until she was about 10 months old and she had never been out
of kennels. Along we went to Coatbridge DTC and it was there my
love of obedience was born and nurtured under the watchful eye of
John Clark (he had hair then). I was also lucky enough to become
friends with Shona; and as she was older (but not wiser!!) and had
transport and so the world of Obedience Shows was opened up to me.
My next dog was a flashy black & white Border collie who was
taken from me very prematurely at only 10 months old, Tipsy was
my next collie and she went on to be C only and represented Scotland
in the Inter Regional event at Crufts. Next was Pax a very pretty
GSD who tried my patience in soooooooooooooooo many ways but I loved
her all the more for it. I had become friendly with Kathy (Ingham)
and I approached her with the view of having a puppy from her famous
Ruskath line; Christmas 1996 along came Dodge (Ruskath Quixotic
Image). Dodge took me to the dizzy heights of ticket and we were
lucky enough to win a ticket and take part in Crufts Obedience Championships
in 2006.
I moved away from
my beloved Scotland in 2007 to live in Northern Ireland. Moving
away to be with Michael and leaving everyone behind was very traumatic
for me but I can honestly say it's been the best thing that has
ever happened to me. I still get a bit homesick for everyone (especially
my Mum) but I'm happier now than I've ever been. : I did worry about
the dogs settling in but the phrase "ducks to water" comes
to mind.
I firmly believe that we should
all put something back into our chosen hobby. I regularly judge,
steward, scribe as well as organising and helping out at numerous
shows. I was previously Chairperson and Head Trainer of East Kilbride.
I'm now Secretary and Assistant Trainer at Lisburn & District
DTC.
We regularly travel to the mainland
to compete and judge at shows, I've also been lucky enough to judge
in Holland a few times. I have been judging since 1979 and I judged
my first Championship Class in 2006 (won by Herbie & Jazz).
I'd like to thank the Crufts committee
for the invitation to judge World Cup Event at Crufts 2010, I feel
very proud and honoured to have been invited to judge at CRUFTS;
something I only ever dreamt about. I especially love the atmosphere
around the ring at the World Cup and the supporters are
. just
FABBY.
I have set a test that I would like to work myself and hope competitors
and spectators alike enjoy it. It's no secret that I LOVE to see
motivated, high stepping dogs - however this won't detract from
me judging each team within the KC rules as I interpret them.
I'd like to wish Good Luck to all
the Countries taking part in this year's event - put your best paw
forward and more importantly ENJOY.

bear (Teddy) GSD

Teddy is now 5 years old
and my first GSD. He certainly wont be my last. Ever since
I can remember I have wanted to have a German Shepherd. They
have a way of getting under your skin and so this has proved
with Teddy. From first seeing him at one week old, he has been
the love of my life.
We are not as experienced at competition as other teams as we
dont have that many shows in Guernsey but we will both
try our very best and hope to enjoy our day without the nerves
taking over too much!
Id like to say a big thank you to Terry Buckley, our Team
Manager and Janet Oliver for all their help and support. Good
luck and all the best to all of our fellow team members and
competitors.
Madeleine
Renouf with Woughstock Wynsome Wyzdom
(Maddie) WS

Maddie is my first collie,
she is very enthusiastic but also sensitive and she tries very
hard to get it right. I am so proud of her.
I am really looking forward to crufts
and will do my best not to let the Guernsey side down.
I feel very privileged to own one of
Jean Payne's lovely Woughstocks-thank you Jean for all your
help.
I hope Maddie will take the atmosphere
at crufts in her stride, coming from an island we are not used
to anything of the magnitude of crufts.
Maddie is very much a water baby and
adores her runs with her ball on our lovely beaches and then
likes to cool off in the sea, often getting me to wade in after
she has left her ball to float out, along with my shoes.
A big thank you to my husband Brian
for all his support and staying home to look after our other
3 dogs to enable me to take part.
The best of luck to my fellow team members
Sandra with Teddy, Margaret with Ruby and Karen with Roxy as
reserve. Enjoy your day and best of luck to all the teams taking
part.
Mararet
Martel with Patois Opera (Ruby)
BC

I am delighted to have
the opportunity to compete again in the World cup Obedience
with my lovely Border Collie Ruby. It is a real privilege to
be able to represent Guernsey for a second time.
Ruby is an extremely sweet and enthusiastic
dog who is a tremendous pleasure to work with. I hope the feeling
is mutual as the older and less agile member of our partnership
she may well view me as the weakest link
.
We are determined to do our best this
year and look forward to having a wonderful time. I hope all
the teams enjoy themselves and I wish my fellow team mates the
best of luck.
Reserve:
Karen Seward with Patois
Concerto (Roxy) BC

Roxy is a 6yr old tri colour
bitch. Roxy had a litter of puppies last October and has just
started work again. She is a very attentive bitch who adores
her mum Briar and her daughter Star, the new addition to the
Patois clan.
Roxy and I were asked to be the reserve
for Guernsey in December, we hadnt really been considering
trying out for the team due to her being on maternity leave.
But she had recovered very well so we said yes, with my daughter
Karen handling her. Roxy is a very playful girl but also very
wilful and has to be kept in check or she will rule the lot
of us.
We wish all our fellow competitors the
best of luck and hope they have a very enjoyable day. I know
we will.
3 Jersey
Team Manager: Donelda
Guy

Jersey's team for 2010
will be Donelda Guy with Iatka One Step Ahead Biba ,and Iatka
Mega Star.Biba is the most experienced of Donelda's dogs at
seven years old. Mega at two years old is a very consistant
dog and this will be her first time at Crufts. The best results
for the Jersey Team was in 2007, when they came in 2nd and Biba
also took 4th in the individuals.
Michelle Cabot makes up the team, Michelle will be handling
Michael Le Gresley's Iatka Star Prize, Prizey was reserve dog
last year. It is not easy working someone else's dog , but Michelle
and Prizey have bonded, so good luck on the day.
The Jersey team would like to wish all the teams taking part
a happy and fun day.

Finally Germany has got
together a team for the World Cup.
We are much honored and happy to be able to compete in this
event. Susi and I have been looking forward to this for a few
years now. This year our dream comes true. We have a very young
team of dogs. It is the first big competition for all of our
team members, including dogs and handlers.
Our special thanks go to Trudy Groenenboom,
Angela Kroon, Ivonne van der Meer and Peter van de Velde from
the Dutch team. It is only due to their help that it is possible
for the German team to compete at Crufts. They trained with
us and gave us hints and advices for the competition.
Good luck to all the competitors on
the green carpet at Crufts World Cup 2010! We hope you all enjoy
your day and the work with your dogs - we do!
Eva Hampe
with Dumf and Galwy Charismatic (Piper)
BC
For many years I have been
a great fan of UK Obedience and as all the other members of
the German team I fell very honoured to compete for Germany
in this prestigious event on the green carpet of Crufts. I am
competing with Piper, a five year old Border Collie male, homebred
out of British import Ch.Bekkis Yldanach Fiain and by an English
sire Komargo Highland Magic to Reakasso. Piper loves his training
and gives everything for his handler. We are competing on the
highest level of FCI-Obedience.
Susi
Huber with de risan Brianna (Brianna)
BC
Every year I am sitting
at the Obedience ring at Crufts and watch with eagerness and
enthusiasm the top handlers with their magnificient dogs. I
still cannot believe it, but 2010 the dream - to compete on
the green carpet with my own dog - comes true.
Brianna is a wonderful, seven year old Border Collie bitch,
I bred and trained her myself. She is allowed to compete in
FCI-Obedience 3. She is a Bellatrix Highlander daughter, now
she returns to her roots. At home she is one dog from nine others
- my special girl right from the beginning. She is always ready
and willing (sometimes too much) to give more than 100 percent
and we both love English Obedience.
We are looking forward to meet new people and their dogs and
be part of Crufts. We will try to give our best.
Dominique
Fice with Begraceful Indiana of Goblins
Fountain (Indy) BC
As a big admirer of English
Obedience I am very proud to be part of the very first German
team competing at Crufts Obedience World Cup.
I have never been to Crufts before (not even as a spectator)
and I am really excited to see all those fantastic dogs working
and to undergo the special atmosphere at this event.
I am entering the team with my 6 year old Border Collie bitch
called Indy. Indy is a kind of crazy dog to train, but she is
also lots of fun. She is clicker trained from the age of 10
weeks on, which makes her a very outgoing dog in training and
competition. She has lots of her own creative ideas and sometimes
she is a little bit fanatic while doing exercises the way she
thinks they have to be done. Training Indy is really thrilling,
she is fast, loves her work and always gives her very best with
a big, big smile in her face. Thank you little Indy!

Djin (Djin) BC
I was very surprised to
get nominated for the German World Cup team with my little girl.
Djin is my second Obedience dog and I took time to prepare her
without hurry for competitions. Meanwhile we are competing on
the highest level in FCI-Obedience and I am sure that Crufts
will be a great experience in her young live.

Twizzle v. Benvenida's Joy (Twizzle) BC

I'm so proud to be in the
Dutch World Cup team; Peter, thanks for inviting me.
Although it's not our first time at the green carpet ( we did
compete in the international Heelwork to Music competition last
year), it feels very special to me to work Twizzle in de obedience
ring at Crufts.
Twizzle is my first border collie and the first dog I work in
C. It's only a few months ago we had our first C-win.
He's one out of a special litter: Twizzle's sister is competing
in the Belgium team. So I want to say thank you to Anneke for
breeding this wonderful litter.
I also want to say a big "thank you" to Trudy, Angela
and Shirley for their great support and welcome training-tips
during our obedience carrier. Without you, we wouldn't have
been so successful.
Finally I wish all World Cup competitors good luck and have
a great time and don't forget to enjoy!
Annelies van de Velde
with Twinkle's Laddy Boy (Laddy)
WSD

I am very happy to be chosen
again for the world Cup Competition.
Laddy is now 7 years old, and it will be our 4th performance
on the green carpet.
In 2007 Holland has won the world cup. 2008 we won again and
last year we were placed 2.
The Dutch team has been changed his competitors except for Laddy
and I, Gwen Brigitte and Trudy will be my new team mates.
I hope they enjoy crufts as well as Laddy and I do. We wish
all the other teams best of luck and enjoy your day. And Guus
and Gio lots off luck on the Obedience Champion Chip.
Gwen Griffioen
with Wyndanwood Plymouth Road Runner (Riley)
Austr. Sheph.

Who could have thought
.
Me and Riley at Crufts on the green
carpet. I am very proud to be selected for the Dutch team. It's
a dream come true!
Riley is my first dog. He's now seven
years old. We started with obedience when he was 16 weeks old.
We both had to learn so much. Riley is my soul mate! He took
me up the classes to C. He won up to date four C and we got
three qualifyers. We hope to get that last one next season.
Thanks to everyone for helping and supporting
me. My mum and dad, thanks, without you I would not have had
Riley. Thanks to Shirley Clowes, a special friend. Thank you
for being there and all your training. We could not have done
it without you!
Good luck to all my team mates, Annelies,
Brigitte, Trudy and good luck to the Belgium team. Good luck
to Guus with Gio and Sue Beavers with Stitch competing in the
dog ticket. Special good luck wishes to "glitter glamour
girl" Shirley Clowes and Cumnock's Pied Piper. Go for it
and enjoy! I wish al the other competitors at Crufts in Dog,
Bitch and World Cup the best of luck, enjoy your day!

Groenenboom with Colliewood
Crazy Legs (Guinness) WSD

It was a strange year in
2009 because Guinness started the year with nearly winning C
from big brother Gio, he had a couple of second and thirds,
his first qualifier in Culverstone and then it went downhill.
Guinness is really a powerhouse of a dog and strangely enough
his motivation and the way he moved became less strong, as people
do I thought something wrong with my training or with his health.
So try to motivate him even more and went to the vet who could
not find anything wrong. To keep a long story short after 5
months they discovered he had a very rare disease after a heavy
antibiotics he is now since a month or so fully back on board
and he is shouting from the top of his lungs , "I am back,
I am back" so I try to convince him that is not absolutely
necessary to do this announcement during his work in the ring.
Peter, our coach, asked me to be the reserve dog for Holland,
thanks for that.
Guinness comes from a family with very
strong and willing dogs. Big brother Gio from Guus does have
his second go at the championships this year, Pedro( Colliewood
Almovodar) from John Higgins the most stylish dog I know , Layla(Colliewood
Caballe "La Layla) from Leny who will qualify for ticket
I am sure next season, litter sister Denim(Colliewood Confidential)
from Linda who is a lookalike from Guinness in a blue merle
and female package, Lulu (Colliewood Candy Girl) who has her
debut this year, Levi (Colliewood Blue Jeans) from Mary will
make the main ring quiet with a wonderful heelwork to music
routine again. I could go on and on, but Paul Anderson big thank
you for breeding all those greats dogs.
About 10 years ago we had Gary Stevens over to judge in Holland,
he was talking a lot about Joanna Hill and how fantastic her
training was. Me and Angela did a lot of courses in England
and yes it was really very inspiring and a eye opener, and we
always were used to nice positive good training from Brian Mc
Govern but Joanna´s way put several dimensions on top
of it , so Joanna a big thank you. A lot of people in Holland
without some perhaps realizing own their success mainly on your
way of training.
In a Crufts write up it is always a good habit, like a Oscar
winner, to thank several people so here it goes.
Martin Brouwer who started me off in obedience, Brian mc Govern
who really make me aware that obedience is nearly a way of live,
Joanna Hill, Shirley Clowes, John Higgins who I am going for
a week course in the summer, he is such a brilliant trainer
and make Guinness not only look strong, motivated and loud,
but more accurate and quiet too, Kamal Fernandez who is the
biggest fan of Guinness I know, I always have to check his suitcases
when he goes home after very good and inspiring days full of
training, I think you made me realize Guinness and perhaps me
are capable of doing great things if I do the work and be more
disciplined, I hope they don't keep you downunder, Linda Rutherford
who is such a great person and gave me a lot of confidence on
her training weekend in January, all the people I train with
in the past, our little training group in Holland on the Friday
nights, they are all to thank for. Last but certainly not least
Angela Kroon, best friend, travel mate, training mate and a
excellent instructor, I am sure that Clooney (Colliewood Blue
Eagle) will make his mark soon .
Blimey what a long write up, I am just the reserve in the worldcup
team ,if I am ever there for the Championship ,Dog Training
Weekly will not be big enough for my write up
Anyway sorry for perhaps boring you to death, I wish all my
fellow competitors lots of success , specially the Dutch team,
Belgium team and of course the German team, girls I hope all
our training together will make you enjoy the first time at
Crufts.
At the championship of course all the Colliewoods, Lorraine
with sweet Buster, Linda with Flyn and everybody else competing
enjoy your day and your dog.

Dixie is a 4 years old
lovely little Border Collie bitch. She loves to work and really
enjoys obedience. When we bought her I didn't plan to do obedience
with her, but here we are at Crufts for the second time representing
Belgium. Last year our team did really well and we ended up
third. Hopefully we can be as successful this year, but above
all I hope that it will be as much fun as it was last year.
I would like to thank Lucie our team manager for all the advice
and lessons she gave me. Good luck to everyone competing at
Crufts, especially my fellow team members Martine, Steven and
Melissa. Also I would like to wish the Dutch team, with Dixie's
brother Twice as Nice Twizzle van Benvenida's Joy, all the best.

My name is Comanchero of
the Two Roses, I'm a male Doberman, bred in The Netherlands
by Johan Peereboom. I come from an IPO-line. I am 5 years old,
and live in a pack with 5 other dogs and mum, Martine Verhoeven,
who's the pack leader.
The last 13 years Lucie van de Casteele has been trying to train
our mum. This is hard work for Lucie because mum is very hard
to train, and prefers to do it her own way, just like a Doberman!
With some help from Shirley Clowes and John Higgins, mum finally
started to obey. That has paid off : I am C only now and member
of the Belgian team for Crufts ! My mum and I hope to work on
"the holy green" on Sunday the 14th of March. We are
very proud to be selected , and whiz all the teams a very good
and sportive competitions and also a lot of fun for handler
and dog.
If we compete on Sunday, it's thanks to real international teamwork
between The Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain. Thanks everybody
!

It will now be the third
time that we have been selected to compete at Crufts in the
World Cup.
I was very pleased with that as we weren't able to train a lot
lately due to work commitments and the renovation of my house.
Nevertheless we will go for it 100% and hope that we can do
better than last year.
This year our team has 2 new members, Martine and Melissa who
will be gracing the green carpet for the first time. I would
like to take this opportunity to wish them and also Krist a
wonderful day and enjoy yourselves!
To the other teams and managers I hope that you all have a day
to remember and I look forward to meeting you all in March.
Also many thanks to Lucie Van de Casteele our team manager and

Crufts 2010 Obedience World
Cup Competition will once again see top dogs competing for England.
All the teams are accustomed to the atmosphere in the main ring,
and have proven that they have all that is needed to compete
at this level. They are all very good team members, supportive
of each other and there is a great camaraderie in the team.
We are very grateful to Rita Marquand and Pets Pad for her generous
sponsorship of the team outfits and to Roy Hammersley and Newbury

and superb refreshments for the team meetings.

This is the 3rd year that
Dizzy has competed in the World Cup and we are very proud to

good year winning 2 tickets to compete in the Obedience Championships.
She is a cracking little dog who puts her upmost into everything
she does and tries very hard to get things right. Good luck

and I coming 4th in the individual (though results like that
always add to the enjoyment of the day) but also the great camaraderie
in the England team and the great atmosphere between all the
teams at the event. Norti and I also competed in the Obedience
Championships where we had a run off for 6th.
Although Norti had lots of places in
CH C in the summer including a Reserve Ticket and some more
Open C wins, a Ticket win eluded us. I think we were both rather
distracted by our new arrival, another male Groenendael, Wally,
who came home in March. Wally is a super character and he and
Norti adore each other, playing like mad on walks and often
found curled up together at home.
I would like to extend special thanks to Mum (Barbara Delany)
for helping to look after Norti and Wally when I am at work.
I would also like to thank my friends from the Collar and Lead
club for their support especially Elaine and Ian and those who
train with me at North Warnborough during the winter. Thanks
to Ingrid, Mary and Jackie for washing so many scent cloths!
Lastly thanks to Paul and Lorna England for breeding such a
fabulous dog, not only a great working dog but also a fantastic
companion in everyday life.
I hope everyone enjoys their day at
Crufts in the World Cup competition and all the other Obedience
competitions being held. Good luck to my fellow team members.

I was thrilled to be selected
as a member of the English obedience team to compete in the
Obedience World Cup at DFS Crufts 2010. As a member of the winning
2009 team I am looking forward being part of the team defending
the title.
I would like to thank our team manager
Stella Henstridge for all the first class organisation and hard
work she puts into the job. One of our team meetings that Stella
organises is at Newbury where Roy Hammersley and his girls cook
us a superb meal, thanks Roy. We do have some good fun at our
training sessions I even had my team mates stand in for the
Irish Dancers last year so instead of Celtic Feet I had "
Chronic Feet " !!!!
It is great to see we have 12 teams
competing this year with new ones from Germany and Canada plus
the USA joining us again. Lets hope the competition keeps growing.

Wow what a journey! From
Denver winning his first Novice at nine months old, 'C' only
at 22 months, qualifying to work ticket by the time he was 2
½ years old and now an Obedience Champion.
He is my first ticket dog,
he goes just about everywhere with me and we both enjoy training
and working together even in the rain and even if he's covered
in mud he still has to jump up for his kiss and cuddle at the
end of every exercise. He's just turned 9 years old and he's
been a major part of my life since the day he was born, he really
is my once in a lifetime dog.
To be part of the England
team again is the icing on the cake for us and I know that we
will both enjoy every minute of the day whatever happens.

with my Basil. He is a fun and outgoing dog, and a pleasure
to train and be with. I am blessed to have him.
Thanks to Bobbie Anderson (US Team Captain)

helped us over the years! Without the two of them, Canada would
not be at Crufts this year. Thanks to Nicole McIllwrick of Synecdocke

Best of luck to my other team mates,

My dog Winston is a Nova

named after Sir Winston Churchill. He is a dual show Champion
in both Canada and the USA. In addition he has his Master Hunter
title as well as his CDX. We are currently working towards his
utility title. Winston is my first dog and he has worked his
heart out for me, putting up with me while I fumbled my way
into this new territory. I have learned so much from him and
he has taught me a lot about myself. I am so proud to be running
him at Crufts.
Thanks to all those who
have helped train Winston and myself. I could never have gotten
this far without all of you. To Monique, for asking me to join
the team. But, a special thanks goes out to my husband, for
always believing in me.

WOW, I just don't know
what to say. Oh well, my name is Buddy. My teammates (Basil,
Monique, Winston, Marie and David) and I are on our way to Crufts
traveling by sleigh on icy cold tundra. I'm sure looking forward
to warming up when we get there and making lots of friends.
A meeting with the Queen would be truly ideal; I'm crossing
my paws for that. I have learned to bow and I know, I must remove
my hat on being introduced (according to Mary Ray's teaching
of protocol to her students).
To all teams entered at Obedience World
Cup and to Judge Kate McCartney and her crew, have a great day.
Oh I almost forgot, my partner David sends his best to everyone

It is a great honour to
be chosen to represent our country especially in the World Cup
event; this will be Gucci's first time in the World Cup Team
and at Crufts. I would like to thank Carole for choosing me
to be in the team and giving me this experience with Gucci.
I have been working Gucci in Open C for the last 2 years and
have managed to gain 3 qualifiers, but not managed to get that
all important win to qualify for ticket. She is not the easiest
of dogs to analysis or train and always decides to have a new
problem every few months, but we keep trying and changing our
training to try and over come what ever she throws at me.
I knew when I agreed to compete in the
World Cup event, training Gucci for the new exercises that are
required would be a challenge. However she has surprised me
and appeared to learn them fairly quickly and appears to have
responded well to the new variety of exercises I have taught
her. I hope when the big day comes we can strut our stuff on
the green carpet and do our country proud, if not, then hopefully
what ever Gucci does, I hope she enjoys herself, I know I will
certainly enjoy the experience.
I would like to thank my dad for all
his help with the new exercises I had to teach Gucci as your
experience has been invaluable.
Good luck to my fellow World Cup team

Xandras Feel The Crunch (Crunchie) WS

Well where do I start when
writing about 'Princess Crunchie', I retired Crunchie at Crufts
last year and never intended competing again with her. However
when I have been training Gucci and Cruz during the season Crunchie
felt left out and was always trying to join in ( in her own
way I might add) . When I started training Gucci the new World
Cup exercise she was always pushing in and trying to go over
the jump and get the dumbbells when I was putting them out,
I could not help but laugh at her.
So when we were asked to take the reserve
spot in the team I agreed as I knew Crunchie would enjoy the
pre crufts training and all the fuss on the day.
Good luck to my fellow World Cup team
mates Adam & Blue and Anne & Kaye. All the best to the

has taken me on an incredible journey into the dog sports world.
Eddy was purchased to be my fly fishing companion and pet. We
were talked into trying some dog sports and he has showcased
his versatile abilities by earning his Conformation Championship,

4 all breed retrievers to earn that combination of AKC Titles.
He also has his CH and OTCH in Canada. Eddy has been the perfect
first dog accepting my novice training mistakes as we learned
to become a team. He always has a grin and is willing to please;
he's very special.
Eddy's career includes 3 invites to
the Master National Hunt Tests, 2 invites to the National Obedience

Conformation at Crufts 2010 and a member of the 2010 USA World

Ridout

I didn't start competing
in obedience until I got my first Dobermann, Hartsmann Laird (Wilkie)
in 1987, although I began training my first Shepherd, Tess, in 1958.
I was a 14 year old schoolboy when I was introduced to dog training
by an ex-RAF dog handler friend of my father. As much as I enjoyed
the training, there was never any intention of competing as my weekends
were taken up with football. However, I did attend both obedience
shows and working trials in the late 50s and early 60s as a spectator
supporting my club mates.
It was whilst I was watching a
P.D. Ticket I saw a Dobermann for the first time - it was a police
dog from Durham. He won the Ticket. I thought he was awesome. It
gave me a huge adrenaline rush. Some 27 years later I was offered
the pick of a Dobermann litter as a gift. Against all the advice,
I accepted and chose the stroppiest dog in the litter - a brown
male, Wilkie. Already having two entire male Shepherds, my main
concern was that they would all live harmoniously together. The
training was now going to be even more important. Both Saxon and
Kye were already attending Harlow and Hertford respectively. So
I took Wilkie to Jim Reynolds. I had a lot of respect for Jimmy.
He reminded me of my earlier mentors. But I knew he would lose interest
in me if I didn't compete. Funnily enough I wanted to work Wilkie.
He was so responsive, whether I was working him or sitting on the
settee watching TV with him, he was a pleasure to be with. He took
me from Beginner to Ticket. We didn't win a Ticket, Reserve being
our best achievement. We went to Crufts twice as part of the Southern
Inter-Regional Team Working Test C. He gave a good account of himself
on both occasions. Wilkie won his first Open C at Southern Alsatian
at the age of five. So five years on I decided to quietly retire
him there. Wilkie had other ideas. He went out with a bang winning
the last C he ever worked.
In the meantime, I added another
Dobermann to the pack in 1993 - Strauss Tanbowtras Front Runner.
Unfortunately, I had to retire him when he was five, with Wobblers
(Dislodged Vertebra). But I had managed to qualify him and gain
a fourth in Ticket at only his second attempt. He also was a special
boy (he only had eyes for me). It was about this time that I was
diagnosed with a lung problem, which meant my competing days were
numbered. Since I have stopped working a dog, my judging appointments
have increased significantly. I have been judging for 17 years from
YKC to Ticket.
I am an Area Officer for Dobermann
Rescue Limited and Vice-Chairman of Rescue Council Members. My other
interests include ornithology and Chelsea Football Club.
Good luck to all the competitors
- I hope you all enjoy your day at Crufts.

Having been asked
to write a little about myself, I thought it would be easy writing
about a subject I knew! Wrong!! So I suppose the best place to start
is the beginning. I became involved in Obedience some 30 Years ago
(I know it doesnt seem possible for one looking so young!),
we had a Border Collie youngster called Bess who was quite well
behaved, so I hadnt even thought of going to training classes.
But friends of ours who lived a few doors away purchased a nutter
of a Springer spaniel called Rebel, he certainly lived up to his
name. They decided to take him training asking us to come along
for moral support, we did and the rest as they say is history, so
I must thank Rebel for introducing me to a hobby that has been a
massive part of my life for 30 years. I learned a lot with Bess,
we won absolutely nothing in 7 years of competing, but I look upon
those years as serving an apprenticeship. The club I attended was
Wilderspool DTC, which sadly is no longer in existence, but the
competitive members coached me well and taught me ring manners,
manners that I hope I still display today.
Through out my Obedience life I
have been fortunate to have come into contact with and to have learned
from some people who I would call Dog People some of
whom are sadly no longer with us, so thanks to all concerned for
your time, your patience and of course your Knowledge, most given
freely and all accepted gratefully.
A big thank you should also go
to those societies who thought me good enough to judge for them.
Although I currently compete with Tilly & Jenna who are C
only & Fizz whos just starting in Novice, I quite like
judging and look on it as an honour to be invited, I judge all levels
up to and including Championship C and have been priviledged
to have judged all over the UK, from Orkney in the North to Somerset
in the South & from Ireland (both north & south) in the
West to Redcar in the East, I have also been lucky enough to Judge
in the Netherlands on two occasions and am set to return again in
June. I see myself as a straight forward judge, I like to see clean
handling and accuracy, if that is coupled with style & Flair
all the better.
I have been involved at Victoria
(Liverpool) ABTC for 20years, where I help with the instructing
and have in the past acted as Show secretary, when they were informed
of my Invites to judge the Committee and members gave me their full
backing, allowing me to take over the club on a few occasions to
practise the rounds, with members & their dogs acting as guinea
pigs, they also hired the hall on a Sunday again to allow me to
practise, So a massive thank you to everyone of them, having support
of this magnitude is very welcome indeed.
I would also like to thank the
3 Ladies who make up my team, Diane my wife who has supported me
in my hobby for all these years, Marie Lewin who I think of as Family
and who is a super person to have on your team And Lyn Guilou who
is a dear friend and instructs at club, I know this is a team I
can trust.
A Massive thank you must of course
go to The Kennel Club Crufts Committee for the Invitation to judge
at the Best Dog Show in the World, it is a true priveledge to be
invted to judge at such a prestigious event. Thanks also to The
GCDS & The YKC departments for putting my name forward. There
are only 5 Obedience judges at Crufts each year so to be invited
as one of them is fantastic, to Judge 2 events is unbelievable.
To all those handlers who have
qualified the very best of luck, enjoy your time in the ring and
remember whatever the result you always take the best dog home.
